AISM Community:

RE:  “New Teachers” joining our Faculty Next Year.

With six weeks remaining in the “Year of the Mountain Zebra”, there is still much teaching and learning to be done at the American International School of Monrovia.  We still have over 15% of our school year remaining!!

As Director, I would like to personally extend my appreciation, on behalf of our faculty, to our proactive parent community for their commitment in supporting our school, and for working with us to strengthen our overall program. This year - for the first time since 1989! - we offered a fully accredited U.S. academic program, for the entire school year!!

As you are already aware, change and transition are two constants here at the American International School of Monrovia.  Sadly, our history has shown that we can expect up to 35% of our student population to change over the next few months. Luckily, this is not the case with our teaching staff.  Next year, I am honored to announce that our school will continue to have one of the highest teacher retention rates for West and Central Africa. Approximately 85% of our teachers will be returning, for a second, sixth, or even eleventh year at AISM!

Even though, next year, most of our present AISM teachers will be returning, the research continues to point to you as being your students’ first and most important teachers. That (as I discovered, some 22 months ago) is a job that lasts a lifetime.

Parents, please remember … classmates and teachers may come and go, and schools may change. However, it is YOU, the parent, who is, and will always be, your child’s first and most important teacher.

The American International School of Monrovia is pleased to continue to be able to support you in this role, as we have several “new” teachers who will be joining (or rejoining) the American International School of Monrovia Teaching Staff in August, for the 2018-2019 School Year.

Teachers joining (or rejoining) the AISM Staff for the 2018 – 2019 School Year:

AISM!?  I am really looking forward to my return back to Monrovia. For those who have not worked with me during my prior tenure at AISM, I believe that learning can be enjoyable for the teacher and student. I try to present teaching materials in various ways that will be beneficial and imprint an indelible impression on the minds’ of students.

My name is Elisha-Christina James and my teaching career began in 2002 in Chengdu, China. From there, I have taught English, Academic English, Social Studies, Language Arts, Science, and other subjects to children from grade one to university.  I have worked internationally in China, South Korea, Qatar, Russia, and Oman, and of course Liberia at the American International School of Monrovia.

I have had a love of other cultures and languages since seventh grade, so in order to pique my interest before I actually set out on this great adventure, I volunteered tutoring foreign (Korean and Somali) students and local students in various subjects like Social Studies, History, Reading, English, and ESL through Lutheran Family Immigration Services.

Before teaching, I attained a B.A. from UNC-Charlotte in Political Science with a History minor. While teaching high school in Beijing, China and Yongin, South Korea, I attained an M.A. in Education with a concentration in Curriculum and Instruction through the University of Phoenix.

I am looking forward to my return to the American International School and to continue to help the school with its ongoing goal of continual school improvement.

Director’s Note:

Teaching Assignments for next year are not confirmed.  Under school policy 5.100: “changes in assignment may occur from time-to-time because of shifting enrollments, and shifting emphases in curricular areas.

As an example, last year, we did not have any student enrolled in ECE I, and we had 8 students enrolled in ECE II. However, this year, in our new Early Years Program (EYP), we now have 12 students enrolled.  Next year, we are anticipating 18 students (at present!!). Therefore, as a school, we invited Ms. Hicks back to our program to provide more support to our newest program and youngest learners.

As you can see, we also invited Ms. Elisha James back to our program.  It is important to us, as a team, to get the very best teachers possible, and to have a unified team that has mastered the challenging skill set of implementing a “Standards-Based Curriculum” that is truly able to help each of your students grow; as the teachers tailor their instruction for individual student success. We are lucky to have two teachers, who have already been trained in our system, rejoining us next school year.  On the other hand, we are also fortunate to come full circle and have our first daughter of an ACS alumnus join the AISM Team.

Indeed! The best is yet to come!!

As our information and projections for next year solidify, more quickly than in prior years, we anticipate that we can inform our community, and our teaching staff, of the “projected” teaching assignments – hopefully -- before the conclusion of this school year.

Have a great afternoon, and please join me in welcoming the newest members of our teaching team to the American International School of Monrovia!!

Jeff
