Welcome to Trimester III at AISM! Our best is “yet to come!”

As we start the final Trimester of the “Year of the Mountain Zebra,” we want to ensure our final trimester is our best!

Throughout this year, our first as a fully accredited school, our community showed resilience and dexterity by completing a “self study.” The purpose of the self-study was a journey of growth and learning.

Just a few minutes ago, our “Assessment and Evidence of Learning team” provided us all with a great gift: the evidence of our students’ growth and learning during the second trimester of the school year.

Spring 2018 Map Scores Evaluation

A few years ago when the school faced external challenges caused by a regional health crisis, I shared the school’s academic performance with the Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) that produces our Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessment. They responded as follows:

“Your positive message about your students’ academic success has reminded me of why we cherish our profession, but more importantly, it reaffirms that anything is possible and achievable. Even in the most challenging situations … by placing students first, and making informed “real time” data-driven decisions, our students' academic growth knows no limit.”

For the two “new” community members joining our program TODAY, I just want to send a quick reminder that this approach is not new. Multi-grade mastery-based planning has been used widely in International Schools for over a decade, and provides more fluidity to meet each student's needs.

The American International School of Monrovia has furthered the multi-age mastery-based flexible grouping system by having students work in various clusters in English and Math.

Next week, for the small percent of students who did not achieve the desired growth, we will be working to try to identify such crucial questions as: what have our students learned? What are their present learning triumphs and challenges? And, what do we – as a learning community – need to put in place to set our students up for success?

Parents who wish to discuss MAP results with their homeroom teachers are encouraged to contact the teacher directly to schedule an appointment. This will allow us to ensure that we are all working together for student academic growth and success.

After a five day “Trimester Recess” it is great to see so many relaxed and energetic faces back at school. Our teaching team is energized!!

Important Dates:

A. Trimester II Report Cards! Posted on Jupiter today at 5:00pm (17:00)

B. Any necessary schedule adjustments to our “flex” groups will be recommended today, and implemented on Tuesday in Lower School and Wednesday in Upper School. Lower School flex group letters will be sent home today.

C. After School Activities will CONTINUE uninterrupted until April 10th, the day before the school goes on Spring Break.

D. Science MAP Test will take place during your student Science class next week. Homeroom teachers will send out the details.

We are all looking forward to another great Trimester of Teaching and Learning, here at the American International School of Monrovia.
