RE: October 8, 2017. “AISM Turns Ten!"

AISM Community,

It is hard to believe how quickly time flies, as today, we celebrate the ten-year anniversary of the American International School of Monrovia, and begin our second decade of offering a quality (now U.S. Accredited) Academic Program.

AISM is a unique community, with a unique history, and I am very fortunate to have been a part of over half its present history. The school is a vital part of the country of Liberia’s reconstruction efforts, after an 18-year period of civil unrest.

As her Excellency, the President of Liberia, Ellen Johnson Sirelaf, wrote in May of 2006, authorizing the reactivation of the school:

“As you know, the Government of Liberia considers the re-opening of the American International School of Monrovia an important demonstration of confidence in the future of our country.”  She went on to write “The resumption of school activities at AISM would also remedy a major constraint on the repatriation of Liberian Professionals who want to return home with their families and children.”

AISM Ribbon Cutting:  October 8, 2007.    Time: 2:05pm
AISM Director: Jerry Craig; U.S. Ambassador: Donald Booth; Liberian President: Ellen Johson Sierlef & Vice President: Joseph Boakai.

It is with great confidence, and with great purpose, that we begin our second decade of operation with the return of a quality, fully accredited, U.S. educational program.

Last week, at a Directors' Conference in Dakar, I met with Mr. Jerry Craig, the first Director of AISM.  He is in the picture above (and below), and he vividly remembers this day, some ten years ago, when the school opened.

Jerry Craig:  AISM Director, 2007 - 2008; Jeff Trudeau:   AISM Director 2012 - Present

He writes: "It seems just like yesterday, when I arrived in Liberia in late August 2007, and began working with others in reopening a school that had been shuttered by three civil wars over an eighteen-year period.

The school owes a great deal of gratitude to former Ambassador Donald Booth and Mrs. Anita Booth for their tireless work and support in this Herculean task.

The President of Liberia, Ellen Sirleaf Johnson, realized the importance of reopening the school and worked with the Ambassador and others to make sure this happened on her watch.

President Ellen Sirleaf Johnson, in her remarks to the assembled guests at the ribbon cutting ceremony, said the following, and I quote, "Let it be known that the reopening of the American International School of Monrovia means that my country is now open for business".  For those in the audience, her words had profound meaning.

Civil wars, Ebola are now in the past. The future holds promise for the good people of Liberia.  I am pleased that The American International School of Monrovia remains steadfast in its mission of excellence and keeping that promise alive.

Congratulations on your ten-year anniversary!"

Gerald F. Craig,
AISM Director 2007 – 2008

As the Director of AISM since 2012, I am very fortunate to have the unwavering support of our entire stakeholder community.  All of us, working as a community, have put our students first – and I am truly humbled by the progress that we have made on all fronts - during the many years that I have been fortunate to be part of the American International School of Monrovia.

Some of our continual school improvement can be seen in the unregistered/private link that is just a quick teaser of the full power point that has been made to commemorate this special day.   Special thanks to Suba Srikumar, Jihane Fazah, Siji Binoy, Hassia Trudeau, and Serdia Holcomb and the countless parents who donated pictures to assist us with this process.   This quick preview can be seen at the following unregistered/private link https://youtu.be/m5wmash1Ync for the next 36 hours.

We will be celebrating this event, as a community, in December, in conjunction with our Holiday performance.  With U.S. Accreditation, as a firm stability marker, the stage is now for an even more successful decade of growth and progress for AISM. This year, the Board of Trustees, and I, are putting benchmarks in place to ensure academic excellence, economic stability and long-term school viability.  Over the course of our second decade, we will continue to strategically improve our students' educational experience here at the American International School of Monrovia.

Happy Birthday AISM!   As a ten year anniversary present, my family, and I, have decided in conjunction with the Board of Trustees, that we will extend our service to AISM for one additional year.   We are now contracted through June of 2019, to ensure the stage is set for another great decade of teaching and learning at the American International School of Monrovia!

Best wishes for a relaxing and enjoyable Columbus Day Recess.  See you back at our ten year old school on Thursday, August 12th.
