AISM Community,

Today is the final day of what has been a very busy, productive, and successful 2018 – 2019 School Year. AISM has much to celebrate, as the strength of the newly accredited U.S. Academic Program continues to grow.

This year, AISM reached academic levels above international and American national norms, as referenced by our school wide MAP scores that our students achieved in a safe and positive learning environment. Please see our final MAP test results in Math, Reading and Science (Grades 3 – 9) that are attached to this document.

This year, our PTA continued to play a pivotal role in enhancing our students’ education, with repainting our gym, purchasing 8 chromebooks for Lower School, and 300 books for the Library. On the other hand, the PTA also enriched our students’ education with Halloween/Fall Festival, Movie and Family Fun Nights, BIG FUN FAIR, and Teacher Appreciation Day. In addition to purchasing over $10,000 worth of equipment and gym improvements, the PTA further put $22,500 into a 9-month CD, which will be available during purchase season next year to fund the PTA new goals to further our students’ educational experience.

I would like to personally thank the PTA Executive Committee:

For information about how to join the PTA, and make a positive difference in enhancing your students’ education, please see the attached information from our outgoing PTA Chair, Ms. Mabel Tolbert.

I hope the two-month summer vacation, June 20 – August 25, provides our community with a well-deserved break and opportunity to recharge for another year of growth and learning in 2019 – 2020 …

The Year of the ___________? (Theme for the year to be identified on August 14th).

It is also, sadly, the time of the year at which we say farewell to members of the AISM community who will be moving on to new beginnings. As mentioned prior, change and transition are two constants here at the American International School of Monrovia. This year, 15 (of our present 97) students will be leaving us. I have known many of our departing students since my arrival at AISM in 2012. We all found out, at Friday’s end of the year performance, that it is never easy to say goodbye!! Next year will indeed be a marked difference without their presence, and with the anticipated arrival of 30 “new” students who will be joining our community. Our current projections show an enrollment of 115 students for the next school year.

We also have two faculty members who will be leaving us in their full time role. One will be moving on to new endeavors and adventures, while we hope that we can count on the other one to work with us part-time to assist our growing student population.

Be it in the classroom as teachers, or by providing other essential elements to our students’ learning environment here at AISM, we know that our school has been made better and stronger with the contributions of our departing staff. On behalf of everybody here at AISM, we sincerely thank you for your service and wish you all the very best on your next endeavors.

Staffing plans for next year

We have been very busy, both concluding this school year, and planning for our next. On August 26th, we are anticipating to start the school year with just over 100 students. This, however, is subject to change. Below is our present staffing plan* for the coming year, which is based on our current enrollment expectations (*Like all good plans, subject to change, and policy 5.100: “changes in assignment may occur from time-to-time because of shifting enrollments, and shifting emphases in curricular areas.”)

Information Updates, School Supplies, and Summer Reading

Returning Parents, please remember to update your students’ health information, and if there are any changes in employer, phone number, email, or original enrollment information, it can be updated at

Also on this portal, you will find our school supply lists for next year, and a recommended (not required) summer reading list for our students.

Please also fill out the updated enrollment contract that takes into account the GDPR regulations, as set forth by the European Union, regarding data protection and consent.

Information about “Bring Your Own Chromebook”

One of the areas that our team of educators has been actively working on is the enhancement of our technology integration in the classroom. To that end, parents of students in Grades 1 and higher are welcome to purchase a Chromebook that is compatible with our school Information Technology system and protocols.

Chromebooks, which run Google operating system, was chosen because of our use of their applications for education. Google Apps are also GDPR compliant. These devices are listed below, and parents can purchase these Chromebook units* to assist their students’ learning, both at home and at school: Please note that prices are subject to change without notice. Only these chromebooks are allowed to be enrolled in our school safety software.

Brand Model Price from Website
1. ASUS C214MA-YS02T $349 Asus Chromebook Flip
2. Dell C213SA-YS02 $359 Dell 3100 2 in 1

*Please note that the school will have a small technology fee, of around $30, that will go towards our cyber safety software, to keep your students safe while using their computer at school.

Students who choose not to purchase their own computer at this time will still be able to have access to the AISM computer network via school computers, which are subject to availability.

Report Cards

Students who are departing the American International School of Monrovia will leave with signed report cards, transcripts (Grades 9 and 10) and exit certificates. If you are returning, please note the report cards will be available to print on line from or Jupiter Learning Portal.

With changes in technology and the ability to “print” report cards virtually, The Board of Trustees and I have determined, going forward, it is best to conclude school on Friday afternoon. Please take note of the new Calendar change for the conclusion of the 2020 School Year.

Board of Trustees

AISM wishes to thank the members of the 2018 – 2019 Board of Trustees for their service:

Please be aware that the Board of Trustees is projecting two to three parent openings for the Board for the upcoming school year. Normally, during the month of September, the Board of Trustees will conduct their annual training during a two-day retreat. This year training will be focused on transition planning for the Director position in July of 2020. If you would like to be part of our school’s Governance, please contact our Board Secretary at, with a copy to myself, the school director, at:

Final Notes:

I offer a special thank you to our entire community at large for all the work that we have done on behalf of our students. Thomas Edison once said … “it is not what you have, but what you do with what you have that makes all the difference.” Well, here at the American International School of Monrovia, we have a great community, and indeed with the support of this community, we have had a very, very special year.

Don’t forget that today students will be dismissed at 12:45!

I wish you all a safe, happy and relaxing summer vacation.

Important Dates:

Today: “Our Last Day Together” – Just the Teachers and your students …. enjoying breakfast, yearbooks, and encore performances.
